VR in Industry: Where It Succeeds, Fails, and Needs Improvement

چکیده
One way of measuring of the success of a technology is the degree to which it has found acceptance in "real world" companies. These companies will only adopt and continue to use new technology if it lets them solve "real world" problems more effectively than alternative methods and techniques. Critical to this success is the way in which the technology is developed and applied to solve business problems. This panel will highlight four successful applications manufacturing (GM), entertainment (Disney), prospecting and extraction (Shell, BP), and defense (AIS). In each of these areas, VR has become an established technology that has been used over a long period of time to address their problems. The panelists will begin by briefly describing the way in which VR is used in their respective industries. They will then discuss the advantages and shortcomings of current VR systems. They will conclude by identifying the critical research advances needed if VR is to find wider application in their industries. Virtual Reality Based Training for Industry, a Cognitive Process Approach
Simulation and Virtual Reality (VR) have been extensively used in many industries, where the success of the initiative has been reliant on technology, training objective and correctly set expectations. Early in VR’s use, success was assured with huge budgets, for instance the military and aerospace. Later on in its use, cheap VR failed because the technology was lacking fidelity, expectations w...
متن کاملVirtual reality in improving mining ergonomics
Virtual reality (VR) has been applied in many sectors where safety and organizational complexity are key issues. This includes advanced manufacturing, the aviation industry, the nuclear industry, military applications, as well as the mining industry. In the mining industry typical applications of VR include the familiarization of new recruits and visitors with the mine layout, the rehearsal of ...
متن کاملLexical Scoping as Universal Quantification
A universally quantified goal can be interpreted intensionally, that is, the goal ∀x.G(x) succeeds if for some new constant c, the goal G(c) succeeds. The constant c is, in a sense, given a scope: it is introduced to solve this goal and is "discharged" after the goal succeeds or fails. This interpretation is similar to the interpretation of implicational goals: the goal D ⊃ G should succeed if ...
متن کاملImproving Virtual Reality Applications in CAD through Semantics
—In this article we propose an architecture for the inclusion and exploitation of semantic aspects in a CAD environment. Our schema focuses on the enhancement and improvement of a commercial (general purpose) CAD system on its Virtual Reality (VR) capabilities. There is a need in combining CAD and semantics in the new generation of computer assisted engineering systems. Usually semantic aspects...
متن کاملComputing Optimal Repairs for Functional Dependencies
We investigate the complexity of computing an optimal repair of an inconsistent database, in the case where integrity constraints are Functional Dependencies (FDs). We focus on two types of repairs: an optimal subset repair (optimal S-repair) that is obtained by a minimum number of tuple deletions, and an optimal update repair (optimal U-repair) that is obtained by a minimum number of value (ce...
